My Going Away Party on Mercer Island, New Year's Eve, 2009

On New Year's Eve, the family gathered to bid me a fond farewell! We had a luncheon at Covenant Shores on Mercer Island - where "Great-Great" (Great-grandma Jolly) and Papa David live...on the shores of Lake Washington. I was thrilled to meet "Cousin Patti" - the oldest living member of the "Cook Family" - Grandma Jolly's clan. Patti, age 89, is one of Grandpa David's favorites!

Uncle George Cook, Great-grandma Jolly's "baby" brother with his cousin, Patti Cook Kirkdoffer. I so enjoyed listening to their stories of the "good old days!"

How sad I felt to have to say goodbye to Grandma Sally, Grandpa David, Great-grandma Jolly and Papa David (Wolter)! Hopefully I can return in spring when Ryan and his family pay a visit to the beautiful Pacific Northwest!

Our Last Day on Thetis Island: Monday, December 28th, 2009

We took a walk to check out the local sites!

This Canadian cow wasn't impressed with my mooing...comment dit-on "moo" en français?

The Thetis Island School is what's known as a "one room school house." That said, I saw a bank of Mac computers when I peeked in the windows!

While Scotch tried out his "Chuck-it" ball launcher in the school's play field, I tried out the swings!

Before we headed for the Chemainus ferry, we all signed the cabin's guest book. I was truly sad to have to leave Thetis Island!

Christmas Morning 2009!

Scotch the Wonder Dog opening one of his presents!!

Christmas on Thetis Island 2009

Helping Uncle Freddy decorate the tree in the cabin!

We also put up a Christmas village in the cabin's living room!

Stockings by the fire...waiting for Santa!

The family crêche...made by Ryan's great-grandmother Jolly over forty years ago!

Enjoying our Christmas dinner with Uncle Freddy and Grandpa David at the Thetis Island cabin.
Joyeux Noël!!

Canoeing around Thetis Island later on Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

The day turned beautiful so after a walk around the property, Grandpa David and I decided to go for a canoe ride!

The cabin has its own lovely cove where I practiced paddling before heading out into open water!

Canoes are tippy!! I appreciated being light when I got in the boat!

While I paddled, Grandpa David steered!

The cove and cabin from the water side.

We tried sneaking up on these seagulls, but they couldn't have cared less!

I boarded this barge to make sure that its lines were all secure!

The cabin...aka Mac's Shack...front the water side.

As we paddled near the rocks we came across this Gulf Island native...he wasn't as excited to see me as I was to meet him!

After a cursory greeting, I threw him back into the water! Brrrrr!

Yes...the water is that green! Beautiful, n'est-ce pas?

Our Papa Fred, Grandpa David's father, Uncle Freddy's grandpa and namesake, and Ryan's great-grandfather, built the McLaughlin family's cabin in the 1960s. In the past three years Grandpa David and Freddy completely remodeled and upgraded it.

The beautiful view from the cabin's deck. Looking out over to Valdez Island and on to the Georgia Strait.

I helped Uncle Freddy string colored Christmas lights on all the trees on the point!

Trip to Beautiful British Columbia: December 23rd, 2009

At 2 a.m. on Wednesday, December 23rd, Grandpa David, Grandma Sally, Uncle Freddy, "Scotch the Wonder Dog" and I piled into Freddy's Jeep and headed up across the U.S./ Canadian Border at Blaine in order to catch the early morning BC ferry from Tsawwassen, BC to Duke Point on Vancouver Island.

Scotch, Grandma Sally and I were pretty crowded in the backseat with all the Christmas decorations, presents and such, but we were happy to be on our way to the family cabin on Thetis Island!

The BC Ferries are really luxurious...with cafeterias, coffee and gift shops, and lots of places to sit and watch the beautiful scenery float by!

The Queen of Alberta was built in Australia...a long way from its final home!

I had a lot of fun exploring the ship!

Grandma Sally and I spent part of the two hour crossing reading on her Kindle...her electronic reading devise that directly downloads books from Amazon.com! I bet if you'd check, you'd find Jeff Brown's award-winning series there!

Then I helped Grandpa David win a game of Risk on Uncle Freddy's computer! They're addicted to the game!

Me and Uncle Freddy and Grandpa David on the car deck of the ferry! We're just arriving at Duke Point, near Nanaimo! Yippeeee!

Once in Chemainus - a small town on the southeastern side of Vancouver Island - we checked out the world-famous murals and then bought a Christmas tree to take to our cabin on Thetis Island!

Logging was the local industry for many years on Vancouver Island.

We were thrilled to find a beautiful tree...and at only $30 Canadian dollars! I helped load it on the roof of the Jeep!

Waiting for the smaller ferry from Chemainus to Thetis Island, one of the Canadian Gulf Islands.

Everything in Canada is labeled with both English and French, because Canada is what's known as a "bilingual" country...a place with two official languages. They speak English on the west coast of Canada and French on the east coast. Oh là là...c'est compliqué!

As I waited for the Thetis Island ferry to arrive, I read up on "Killer Whale" facts...they're really called Orcas. The orca or killer whale is a toothed whale and is a member of the Dolphin family (it is the largest dolphin). There are 3 distinct species of these warm blooded, air breathing mammals: Resident Killer Whales, Transient Killer whales, and Off-shore Killer Whales. The main factors which set each species apart are - social behavior, physical appearance, preferred food, and vocal dialects. At this stage, there is little known of the Off-Shore species of Killer Whales as they are seldom seen in protected coastal waters. Although the travelling ranges of Residents Killer Whales, Transients Killer Whales, and Off-shores Killer Whales overlap, they have never been seen to mix. One of the best locations for orca whale watching is off Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada...that's right! Right by the McLaughlin's Thetis Island cabin!

I was so excited when the ferry to Thetis Island finally arrived!! Woooohooo!

The sun came up as we made the 25 minute crossing from Chemainus to Thetis!

Before I knew it we were approaching Thetis...the McLaughlin family has had a cabin there for over fifty years!

Hooray for Thetis Island!!

What fun it was to finally make it to the Thetis Island cabin! I'd heard so much about it from Ryan! And he didn't exaggerate...it's a really beautiful place!

While Freddy, Grandpa David and Grandma Sally unloaded the Jeep, Scotch and I ran around on the point, looking for sea otters and blue herons!

First thing Uncle Freddy built a warm fire in the cabin's stove in order to chase the Canadian cold away!

Toasty warm...ahhh!!
